Liberty

Liberty
Liberty is one of London’s most famous stores, founded in 1875 to sell clothing, fabrics, jewellery, ceramics and furniture. As well as importing goods like silk from the Empire, Liberty established links with designers from the Art Nouveau movement, including William Morris, Arthur Silver and Archibald Knox, who produced designs for the company. The company specialized in blockprinted fabrics—lawns, woollens and linens—with distinctive designs which are known as ‘Liberty prints’. The fabrics have featured in fashions by well-known designers, including Mary Quant in the 1960s, Zandra Rhodes in the 1970s and Joe Casely-Hayford in the 1990s.
